Jaime Leopold was born in the Bronx, N.Y., in 1946 and moved to Portland with his parents, Rose and Bernard, in 1951. He spent his twenties experiencing the bohemian wilds of San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury and playing upright bass in the celebrated genre-defying group, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. After returning home to Portland, Jaime founded a successful marketing agency (now Leopold Ketel) and raised two daughters with his wife, Shirley Lewton. Jaime dedicated the last decade of his life to writing and performing his original songs with a close-knit group of talented musicians. He starred in the 2017 film, The Last Hot Lick directed by Mahalia Cohen, based loosely on his life.
