A história centra-se em quatro órfãos pouco jovens: um, educado pelo conservador do museu do Louvre (onde se esconde um assassino albino), outro, um refugiado da “luta livre” mexicana, o terceiro, uma recente vítima de cobras no seu avião e o quarto, um residente “normal” de uma X-Comunidade de mutantes. O infeliz quarteto visita uma fábrica de chocolate, onde dão de caras com um roupeiro encantado que os transporta para a terra de Gnarrnia (o “G” é silencioso). Aí eles encontram um espalhafatoso capitão de um navio pirata e estudantes zelosos de feitiçaria e juntam-se, entre outros, a um leão, sábio e libidinoso, para derrotarem a maléfica White Bitch de Gnarnia.
