Il film narra le vicende di Joanna Mitchell (Meaghan Jette Martin), detta Jo, una nuova studentessa alla North Store High School, figlia di un costruttore di auto da corsa per la NASCAR. Al suo primo giorno, Jo conosce l'artista Abby Hanover, che Mandi Weatherly, leader delle Plastics, vede come una rivale. Jo decide di diventarle amica perché Abby, essendo ricca, possa pagarle il college dei suoi sogni. Allora, Jo inizia a frequentare Mandi e le sue amiche Chastity Meyer e Hope Plotkin, per vendicare le torture fatte subire ad Abby. Ma tutto si complicherà, quando Abby, scoprirà che la sua amicizia con Jo è "comprata".
