Heródes királyságát komoly veszély fenyegeti. Nem csak Pontius Pilátus (Hurd Hatfield) hatalma gyengíti a tekintélyét, hanem egy rongyos próféta egyre növekvő népszerűsége is. Názáreti Jézus (Jeffrey Hunter) és tanítványai félelemmel töltik el a Rómához hű uralkodókat, akik a gyilkosságtól sem riadnak vissza, hogy megállítsák a számukra kedvezőtlen folyamatokat. A szépséges Salome (Briqid Bazlen) szemet vet Keresztelő Jánosra (Robert Ryan), és mindent elkövet, hogy a fejét vegyék. Lucius (Ron Randell), a római patrícius másodszor is segít Jézusnak, és ezzel fenekestül felfordul az élete.
